Whether you’re a photography fanatic, selfie savant, or camera casual, everyone loves to show off a particularly fun, interesting, or creative shot. While finding the next great photo can be a challenge, there is one cool photography trend that you’re sure to love: a photo within a photo.

It’s a simple idea that, with a little planning and patience, can create some truly stunning photos. To create your own photo within a photo, all you’ll need is an idea, a photo (printed, framed, or on-screen), and a firm hand (or tripod).

Need some inspiration? Here as some of our favorite ideas to get you started:

Trip Down Memory Lane

Have an old photo album from when you were a kid? Take a couple and bring them back to the future by “matching” them to where they were originally taken. This is especially fun with childhood pictures. Just be prepared to re-experience some questionable fashion choices.

Then & Now

Get the entire Benjamin Button experience in one photo. Print out a large photo from your youth, chop it in half, and hold it up to give a perspective of then and now. If you plan ahead, you can get a snap every five or ten years to create an amazing snapshot of your life.

Once in a Generation

Span the decades and bring together a whole family history with this bold “generational” photo idea. This is also a fantastic family photo op, with grandparents proudly holding parents proudly holding children.

First & Last Day

Capture an entire school year with a first day-last day photo. Your kids will love to see how they’ve changed over the year! Of course, the crème de la crème is the first day of kindergarten-high school graduation photo.

Gonna Get Married

Getting married? There are tons of great photo in photo ideas to choose. Honor the proud parents by showing off their wedding pics, display your first date photo, or get some great then-and-now bridesmaids snaps!

Grow Old with Me

Speaking of weddings, you can memorialize your anniversary with an incredible, heart-warming photo showing the wedding day. Better yet, get a picture every 5 years to show how your love has grown as time has gone by!

Cheat!

Is your subject too young to have a before photo? Cheat! Use a frame to simulate the photo. We won’t tell anyone.

Keep Taking Pictures

No matter the idea you choose, you can’t go wrong with a photo within a photo. Just remember that there aren’t any hard-and-fast rules to getting your own shot. (And don’t forget to get your print framed at framedit.com.)

Once you have your shot, be sure to share your work with us using #photoinphoto. We’d love to see what you’ve got!
